Natural Dyeing Silk Scarves  at Elysium Studios in Swansea

new dates coming soon

Yvonne is a designer committed to sustainability, passionate about creating environmentally friendly designs onto natural fabrics, produced through an ecological and environmental ethos.

Using nature as her palette, walking the local cliffs, Yvonne sources leaves, stones and disregarded pieces of metal to imprint onto natural fabrics creating her original designs. The mordants used are naturally sourced iron-enriched rocks, rusty tin cans or parts from vintage motorcycles. There is a huge connection with the environment and every aspect is carefully considered.

Her enthusiasm for creating diverse, unique fabrics has initiated many investigations into colour and eco contact printing. Yvonne also works with cyanotype, recycled fabrics and camera-less photography.

In this workshop you will learn how to create beautiful botanical prints on silk scarf using sustainable natural plant dyes, using leaves, petals and berries for pattern and colour.

We will discuss mordents, immerse dye, create repeat patterns whilst learning about colour extraction, how to fold, wrap and bind. Then eco print by direct leaf contact onto silk using nature’s own alchemy during the bundle dyeing method. Producing a silk scarf for you to take home.

You will be provided with a 100% Silk hand rolled scarf, Yvonne will bring along sustainable and gentle collected fallen flora and fauna to aid your workshop, however, feel free to bring any leaves, flowers, bark, berries, red cabbage, red onion, onion skin etc

Please bring An old towel, apron, gloves, scissors, notebook & pen, small tub or bowl, bag for wet items to carry home

Natural Dyeing 3 Week Eco Printing Course  at Elysium Studios in Swansea

new dates coming soon

In workshop one, you will learn how to create beautiful botanical leaf prints on Egyptian and vintage cotton using sustainable natural plant dyes. We will discuss how to produce different natural mordents and, how to best to fold, wrap and bind. You will then arrange your leaves to eco print onto 4-6 small and one large piece of fabric to produce a leaf print by direct leaf contact, during the bundle dyeing method. These will be kept in the studio until the second session giving nature time to work her magic.

Session two and three You will open your bundles and use them to create a wall hanging. In this workshop, we will discuss the Japanese bora and sashiko stitch and its connection to slow stitch. The slowness of hand stitch gives time for reflecting and allows time to consider the work and make spontaneous changes. You will be encouraged to take a more considered and leisurely approach to your own creative technique. Slow stitch is considered the ‘mindful’ textile art where nothing matters but the piece itself, rhythmical and therapeutic a time to lose yourself for a couple of hours- time for you!

By the end of the three sessions, you will take home a beautiful unique handmade wall hanging.

You will work in a small group, with a maximum of six.

You will also be provided with a quota of Egyptian and vintage cotton to complete your project. Yvonne will provide gently gathered natural products for you to use,  however, feel free to bring any leaves, flowers, bark, berries, red cabbage, onion skins etc
